Description

Maples is a shop dating to around 1900 in Torquay. It is built of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with fine white joints, and has terracotta dressings and a slate roof. The design is influenced by Dutch architecture and the Arts and Crafts style.

The shop is three storeys and an attic high, with a symmetrical five-bay front. A square-headed gable sits above the three central bays, and the bays are divided by pilasters on the first and second floors. A two-storey canted oriel window is positioned centrally. The shopfront has been altered with a modern plate glass window. A terracotta fascia above the shopfront features egg-and-dart moulding, a cornice, and carved lettering reading “UPHOLSTERERS, CABINET MAKERS”. The first-floor windows are round-headed, with keyblocks, while the central oriel has a terracotta frame and mullions. The second-floor windows have moulded brick pediments, with cartouches below the sills. The first and second-floor windows are casements, with stained glass above the transoms. The oriel is topped with a brick balustrade featuring round-headed openings. A pair of round-headed attic windows are set within moulded architraves, and a central oculus is topped with a moulded brick panel reading "ESTABLISHED 1805". The interior of the building has not been inspected, but may retain features of interest.

The building is included in the listing for group value, and its brick and terracotta facade is a prominent feature in the centre of Torquay.
