Description

No. 1 is a house and shop located at the end of a terrace, originally built in the 1850s and now used as offices. The shop was likely added in 1864 when Torwood Street was widened, resulting in the demolition of the end house of the terrace. There have been 20th-century additions to the rear. The building is plastered with a slate roof that has a half-hipped end on the north side. It features stacks with rendered shafts and projecting cornices, including a front lateral stack with a scrolled shouldered shaft.

The house is double-depth and has a slightly bowed front, entered from Parkhill Road. The shop is a canted block added to the right end, facing Torwood Street. The exterior is two storeys high with an attic and has a three-bay east front facing Parkhill Road. It has deep eaves supported by paired moulded brackets, with bays divided by pilaster strips, a first-floor sill band, and an eaves band. The front door, located to the left, is a six-panel design with a deep overlight. The first-floor windows to the left and centre have been reglazed in their original openings, while there is a blind window to the right. The ground floor has two reglazed windows that are partly obscured by a single-storey flat-roofed addition from the 20th century.

In front of the building, there are railings enclosing a small area and bounding the path, featuring pronounced ogee finials. The interior has not been inspected but may contain interesting features.
