Description

The Clock Tower, built in 1902, stands on The Strand, Torquay. It was designed by J Donkin of Bournemouth, with carved stonework by Harry Hems & Sons, and constructed by EP Bovey, funded by public subscription to commemorate Richard Mallock, M.P. The tower is constructed of yellow sandstone with a grey limestone plinth and dressings. It is built in a Gothic style and has a triangular plan with flying buttresses. Each face features traceried panels, and the tower is capped with a conical roof topped by a crocketed finial. The lower stage has round-headed moulded recesses; one contains a door with stained glass, another a two-light window with stained glass, and the third a memorial plaque. According to Ellis’s historical survey, the original design was more elaborate and included a drinking fountain. Three lamps originally illuminated the clock faces, but were replaced with luminous dials in 1924. The interior has not been inspected but may contain features of interest.
