Description

The Old Malthouse is a mid-18th century malthouse, later used as a dwelling and store, and converted into a dwelling around 1988-9. It is constructed of brick with a 4-course modillion cornice and a gabled stone slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan, originally oriented at right angles to the road, with a later extension of one bay at the north-east end. It is two storeys high with an attic.

The south-east facade, which remains largely unchanged, has a three-window range. It features small dormers with 2-light casements under segmental arches, with the outer first-floor windows inserted between 1988 and 1989. The gable facing the road has two segmental-arched openings. The north-west front has been modified, but incorporates two small dormers and features a flight of 8 stone steps leading to a first-floor door. A former garage doorway on the left has been glazed. The interior was not inspected, but is noted to contain a collar-truss roof. The building is located close to Malthouse Farmhouse and is grouped as a designated heritage asset with that property.
