Description
The churchyard walls and piers to the Church of St. John were built between 1839 and 1840. They are made of Portland ashlar and feature wrought and cast-iron elements. The boundary wall is constructed in squared and coursed blocks that follow the slope of the hill rather than a horizontal line, topped with a plain flush weathered coping and rising to approximately 1.5 meters across the full width of the churchyard.
At each end of the wall, there is a single pier, and in the center, a pair of piers raised on a simple plinth to the height of the wall, flanking a set of eight plain stone steps with return walls. These central piers support a simple iron overthrow and are each flanked by about 1 meter of iron railing. All the piers are square with a sunk panel on the face, topped with gabled capping, stepped weatherings, and roll capping.
On the left end, there is an opening leading to another flight of steps. To the left of this, along the northwest boundary of the churchyard, the wall rises at the far end to a flight of twelve steps that lead to a gate opening into the former Rectory garden.
