Description
The Post Office in Fortuneswell, Portland, is a commercial building dated 1894. It is constructed of yellow brick with stone dressings and decorative terra-cotta elements, topped with a slate roof featuring clay cresting. The building stands three storeys high and has two bays, with central plaques.
On the second floor, there are paired arched plate-glass sash windows set in raised surrounds, which feature bold keystones and pilasters above a plat cill band. Below, the ground floor includes two windows flanking deep-set doors that are framed by fluted 'Doric' pilasters, along with an additional 19th-century panelled door with a segmental head and keystone, all beneath a prominent cornice with cast iron cresting.
At the first floor, there is a stone plaque inscribed with "POST OFFICE AD 1894," and above it, a terracotta panel depicting a head flanked by swags. A terra-cotta frieze with roundels and two-course dentils runs along the eaves level, partially into the extrados of the second-floor arches. Plain pilasters frame the upper two floors. This building represents a typical bold commercial design that has remained unaltered over the years.
