Description
Bow Cottage is a small house located at the lower end of Artist Row in Fortuneswell, dating from the early to mid 19th century. It is constructed from small-sized Portland ashlar with large flush quoins and features an asbestos-cement slate roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a single window on the front. All windows are 4-pane sashes, including a raked half-dormer, and there is a 20th-century door to the left. The ground and first-floor openings are adorned with good flush voussoirs. A brick stack is positioned to the right, with slightly raised coping to the left, and on the plain rendered return, there are remains of flues from a demolished adjoining property.
To the right of the house, there is a low wall made of large stone blocks with a high flat saddle coping that returns to the front of the house. On the left, there is a worn stone step and a large rectangular pier set back. Bow Cottage is modest in appearance but is better preserved than many other houses on this street, representing the artisan origins of the area.
