Description
The Old George Coach House, George Stores, and George House originated as an inn and coach house, later adapted into a shop and two houses arranged in a row. The shop section dates from the early to mid-18th century, with an early 19th-century coach house addition, altered in the mid- to late-20th century. The front of the shop is built of freestone, while other parts of the building use coursed and random rubble. Ashlar and rendered chimneys rise above the structure, and the roofs are covered in stone slate, with concrete tiles at the rear.
The building is two storeys with an attic, and includes an arched coachway leading to a rear yard. The central part, George Stores, has a two-window, three-light chamfered mullioned casement arrangement with hoodmoulds over the windows. A central doorway is topped with a segmental pedimented stone hood supported by shaped brackets, and has a 20th-century door. An oval arched opening connects it to the Old George Coach House to the left. This section has door and loft openings with deep stone lintels, now fitted with 20th-century leaded casements. Several other single-light casements have been inserted in the 20th century. George House, to the right, features two and three-light chamfered mullioned casements, along with evidence of a small, blocked stair window. It has a 20th-century doorway with a stone lintel. An original ridge chimney with a moulded cap is located at the north end of George Stores. The rear of the building mostly has 20th-century windows. A parallel-roofed range extends from the rear of George House.
