Description

No 3 George Street is a house in a row, dating from the late 17th century with additions from the mid to late 18th century. It is constructed of mixed squared and random rubble limestone, with ashlar chimneys and a concrete tile roof. The central part of the building is two storeys high, with two-storey additions to the west and rear, and a three-storey addition to the east that connects with Nos 1 and 2.

The front features a single-window arrangement in the central part, with a three-light recessed chamfered mullioned casement on the ground floor and a timber-framed iron casement with lead-latticing above. To the right, there is a flat-roofed timber porch with coloured glass in leaded side panels and an iron hoop arch, leading to double doors. Originally, there were ridge-mounted chimneys at both ends of the central part, but only the one at the west end remains. The addition to the left has 20th-century inserted garage doors with a timber lintel and a three-light leaded casement above. The three-storey section to the right has a single-window arrangement, with a two-light window at ground level and three-light windows on the upper floors. The middle floor features a former doorway that now has a 19th-century leaded casement with coloured glass.

At the rear, the wing has east-facing three-light chamfered mullioned casements on each floor and two ridge-mounted chimneys. Inside, one room contains a bread oven. Originally, this building consisted of three houses but later became the workshops of the Nation family, who were local stained glass manufacturers; some lead melting equipment from that time still survives.
