Description

The monument to Elinor Webley is a chest tomb located in the churchyard approximately 11 metres southeast of the tower of the Church of St Mary and St Peter. It dates from the late 17th century and is made of sandstone. The tomb has a flat top with a moulded edge, and the west end features an incised decoration resembling a lyre, although this is now largely concealed. There is an inscription on the top dedicated to Elinor Webley, dated 1715, which is in fine lettering, but it is likely that the tomb itself is older. This monument is aligned with the monuments of Walter Webley and Christian Webley, forming part of a group of four family memorials. At the time of the survey in December 1983, the tomb was almost sunk into the ground.
