Description
The Wintle Monument is a chest tomb located about 6.5 meters south of the tower of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Westbury-on-Severn. It commemorates John Wintle, who died in 1827, and is made of stone. The tomb features a swept, weathered top with a moulded edge and a fluted pulvinated frieze. Each corner has quarter-rectangular gadrooned balusters with fluted shafts. The south side displays a rectangular panel with a raised edge and Adam-style decoration, while the north side has a moulded frame with a sunk margin surrounding a rectangular panel that has scalloped corners and contains paterae. The ends have a raised moulded margin, and within the rectangular panel, there is an indented semi-circular top with leaf decoration in the spandrels. The tomb features good lettering and some later inscriptions. It is part of a group of five listed Wintle monuments.
