Description

The tower and spire of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Westbury-on-Severn are notable structures dating from the late 13th century for the tower and the 14th century for the spire. The tower features thin grey rubble walls accented by larger red-brown quoins, and the spire is covered with shingles. It has a square shape with a battered plinth that includes roll moulding on the north face. On the left side, there are square-set corner buttresses, while the right side has an octagonal stair turret adorned with pilasters on the north and west faces.

At the upper level, there is a 2-light window with geometric tracery and a circular clock face above it, along with a lancet window on the stair turret to the right. The spire is broached and octagonal, with slight eaves and two square openings at the lower level that have timber louvres, topped with lean-to roofs. A ball finial and weathercock are positioned at the top. The east face of the tower lacks a plinth and has square-set corner buttresses. It features a chamfered, 2-centred arched opening leading to double boarded doors. Above this opening, there are two creasings for the roof of a demolished chapel, with a lancet window in between and another lancet above that has two stone louvres.

Internally, heavy timber beams support the floor above. The tower is detached from the main church. A medieval chapel located to the east of the spire was re-roofed in 1779 and served as a school from 1710 to 1849 before being demolished in 1862. The spire underwent repairs using timber from casks in 1680.
