Description

Elton Court is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It is constructed of red brick in English garden wall bond, sitting on a random rubble stone plinth, and is topped with late 20th century double Roman tiles. The building is three rooms wide and two-and-a-half storeys tall.

The main facade originally featured six windows, but the third window from the right on the first floor is now blocked, and the corresponding ground floor window has been moved slightly to the left. The front door, which was originally located under the fourth window, has also been shifted slightly to the left. It is a six flush-panel door with the top two panels glazed, surrounded by a reeded frame and plain block upper courses. Above this is a plain frieze with a flat projecting hood covered in lead.

The windows are two-light mullion and casement types with flat heads, iron opening casements, and cambered brick-on-end arches above. A plain brick string course runs at first floor level across the front. There are three gabled dormers, each with two-light casement windows.

The chimney is located on the ridge between the two right-hand rooms, with a projecting gable chimney on the left that sets forward beyond the stack. At the rear, there is a projecting stair turret in the centre, an early 19th-century wing on the left, and a lean-to roof that likely followed a fire; the wing to the right has been removed.

Inside, there is a dog-leg main staircase with a full string, heavy moulded handrail, square reeded newels, and turned balusters. A spiral stair next to the left chimney rises from the ground floor to the attic, with no opening to the first floor. The end attic originally had no communication with the other attics.
