Description

The Barn and Granary at Grove Farm is a 17th-century structure featuring a timber-framed design set on a random rubble plinth, topped with a tiled roof. The barn consists of five bays, with a two-bay granary situated above a former stable on the left side. Central to the barn are double doors at the eaves, framed on stone at the base. The right side has weatherboarding, with one brick-nogged panel below and other sections now empty. There is a tension brace to the gable and a later doorway at the end. On the left, the weatherboarding above has one brick-nogged panel below, leading to a lean-to pigsty made of random rubble with a double-Roman tile roof. The front of the shed is open, supported by a brick pier, and there is a stone wall surrounding the yard, which includes a stone chute for feed on the left.

The granary, built at the same time as the barn, features curved tension braces, with wattle and daub infill above and rendered brick panels below, although the left panel is now open. Stone steps lead up to the granary, which has a dog kennel below on the left return. The roof is hipped above the upper purlins. Inside, there is a stone-paved threshing floor, flanked by low walls with timber sills, a central post supporting the tie beam, and tension braces connecting to the main wall posts. An inserted loft is located on the right side, and the structure includes a collar and tie beam truss with angle struts, two pairs of purlins, and a square ridge. The granary features an upper cruck truss, with outer walls boarded to the eaves and brick infill below the tie beam to the barn wall, while wattle and daub infill is present above, although the daub is only applied in the granary.
