Description

The cross at the junction of Bell Lane and the A48 in Westbury-on-Severn was built in 1887, as indicated by the date carved on its head. It is made of ashlar stone and stands on a tall, square, stepped base. The bottom step features a projecting top with a hollow chamfer beneath it, followed by two plain steps. Above these steps is a reused medieval cross base, which is square but has been reduced in width on the top half, with a square set-back on the north and south sides and canted sides on the east and west, leading to a sloping base.

The cross features a tall, tapering stone shaft that quickly transitions from a square shape to an octagon. At the top, there is a square head that oversails the shaft, with corner pilasters that originally had finials, though only one finial remains. Each face of the head has gables with a cross roof between them, and there is a shield on each face, two of which are inscribed with the year 1887 and two with the letters IHS. Above this is a stone cross with floriate ends to its arms, and a semi-circle connects the arms to the stem below. The cross is part of a group with the nearby church and churchyard memorials.
