Description
The statue located in the T-shaped canal at Westbury Court Gardens is likely from the mid-17th century and stands on an early 18th-century base made of ashlar stone. The statue is positioned on a square plinth at the top of the canal, which is slightly raised above the water level. The plinth features a moulded top and a tall base with a moulded cornice. The statue itself is of Neptune, depicted with his left foot on a dolphin. His left arm holds the dolphin's tail against his hip, while his right arm is raised. He has a bearded face, and his cloak drapes down from his shoulders over the dolphin. The statue is thought to be in the style of Nicholas Stone and dates to the mid-17th century, while the plinth is believed to have been constructed between 1715 and 1725. This statue is part of a group that includes a boundary wall and a gazebo.
