Description

The barn at Southerns is a 17th-century structure, altered in the 18th century. It is constructed with three-panel high timber framing, filled with brick nogging, and has brick gables and a tiled roof. A double-boarded door is centrally located, reaching to the eaves; one section of this door is divided horizontally. Two bricks are omitted from the nogging in the centre panels to the right of the door, and one to the left, to allow for ventilation. A section of the bottom panel by the left door is missing. In the second bay, a stud has been moved to accommodate a boarded door on the right, with a glazed window to the left. The left return gable is brick, with four slit air vents at the top and bottom, and two between either side of a four-pane window. A tie beam is exposed along with brickwork above it, featuring two slit air vents and an octagonal owl hole. Internally, timber ties are present at sill level on either side of the threshing floor, leaving a space open below, with straight braces connecting to the wall posts. The end bay on the left has been converted into a stable with a loft above, which is open to the main barn. A trough and rack remain, although the partition that separated the horses is missing. The roof structure consists of tie beam trusses with collars and angle struts, two pairs of purlins, a square ridge, and wind braces at the ends, connecting the purlins to the wallplate. The barn forms a group with the adjacent house.
