Description
The gatepiers and gates at The Moat date from the late 17th century or early 18th century. They feature square piers on each side of the gates, constructed from Flemish bond brickwork with stone tops. The wrought-iron gates are set on a brick plinth over the moat and include stone hinge blocks in the nib for the gates. Each pier has a moulded stone cornice and a stepped stone base that supports ball finials. The pair of gates has slightly larger stiles with curved tops, featuring a St. Andrew's cross made of semi-circular braces in the bottom half, a mid rail above, and a sagging top rail. The clashing stiles are the same height as the hanging ones, and both the dog and main bars are adorned with spear finials.
