Description

Southerns is a farmhouse located on Southend Lane in Newent, dating from the early to mid 18th century, with alterations and extensions made in the mid to late 19th century. The entrance front features Flemish bond red brick and a slate roof from the 19th century, while the rear is finished in rough render, with a lower wing made of painted brick on a stone plinth and a tiled roof. The building is laid out in an L-plan, with the angle infilled later, and has a three-window wide entrance front from the 19th century. It is two storeys tall with part attics.

The entrance includes a four-panel door with top glazing and a flush bottom, accompanied by a rectangular fanlight, all sheltered by an open timber porch with fretwork bargeboards on the gable. On either side of the entrance are sash windows with stepped stone voussoirs. The first floor features similar windows above the ground-floor ones, and there are dentil eaves along the roofline. Gable chimneys project from the structure, with the left chimney having a large stone base and two tiled offsets.

On the left return, behind the gable of the front, there is a conservatory, followed by a three-light mullion and transom window with small panes and a cambered head. A single-light window is located on the right side of the first floor, while the left side features a three-light window similar to the ground floor but with leaded lights. There is also a three-light casement window in the gable at the rear, with the roof linking hipped at the front and a short hip crossing the ridge at the rear.

The rear elevation shows a three-light casement window with a flat head on the ground floor and a blank space above. To the left is a tall stair window with a low transom, one glazing bar, and Y tracery in a semi-circular head, also with leaded lights. A two-storey canted bay with a hipped roof is found to the left, featuring French doors below and a four-pane sash window above, along with a fretwork eaves board. A single-storey wing on the left has a three-light mullion and transom window with leaded lights. A brick chimney is located by the eaves on the right end of the main block. The interior has not been inspected. Southerns forms a group with two nearby barns.
