Description
The East and South Barns at Whelpley Ash Farm are two barns that are joined at right angles, dating from the mid-17th century for the southern barn and the later 17th century for the eastern barn. They feature timber frames resting on brick sills, with dark weatherboarding and steep red tile roofs.
The older southern barn consists of six bays and has a gabled porch that projects to the south, positioned off-centre to the west. It has jowled posts with long straight braces connecting to the tie-beams. The roof is supported by inclined queen-posts that hold a clasped-purlin on each slope, with the principal not diminished above the notch that houses the purlin. There is a collar truss in the porch area.
The eastern barn has three narrow bays at the northern end, featuring jowled posts and curved inclined queen-posts in the roof. There are housings for former axial floor beams located between the tie-beams, and mortices in the posts indicate a former floor structure. A lower floor has been added to this barn. The bays at the southern end have unjowled posts, while the northern bay next to the road has been largely rebuilt in the 19th century.
