Description
White Hart Cottage is a building that began as two houses in the early 18th century, likely incorporating an older timber frame, as indicated by the date 'AD 1717' carved into the brick next to the northern door. It has a lower west extension and underwent alterations in the late 20th century. The structure is made of red brick in English bond, with some black headers and Flemish bond on the eastern gable, and features a flint-walled western extension. The steep roof is covered with old red tiles and has a catslide at the rear.
The cottage is located at a crossroads and faces south, presenting a pair of adjoining one-and-a-half storey houses. Each half has a gabled dormer window at the eaves, along with a wide and a narrow small-paned casement window beneath a segmental arch. The narrow windows in the middle have replaced the former front doors. There is a large external chimney on the eastern gable with offsets and an oven beneath the tiled roof, while a similar chimney on the western gable was removed in the 20th century. The roof structure consists of two bays and includes a crossbeam that indicates a former partition between the two houses.
The 1838 Tithe Map shows the property as two houses with small gable outshuts. Inside, the cottage features exposed beams and an open fireplace with a bake oven, which is missing only its wooden door. Additionally, there are two gabled dormers on the rear roof slope.
