Description
Whelpley Ash Farm is a farmhouse that has been converted into a private house. It dates from the late 16th century, with the southeast bay added in the early 17th century, and features a parallel early 19th-century brick rear range that extends to the south. The house underwent renovations around 1976, which included lean-to extensions on the east and west sides. The front (east) displays exposed timber framing with red brick infill, while the south end is plastered with false timbering. The west wall is made of red brick, and the building has steep old red tile roofs.
The house is two stories high and consists of three structural bays, facing east into a courtyard. The casement windows have been renewed. Inside, the structure reveals the framework of a two-bay 16th-century house, featuring a large chimney that was originally external on the south gable and a chamfered axial beam in the southern bay, with a cross beam in the longer northern bay. There are jowled posts and straight braces supporting cambered tie beams, along with a roof that has collar and queen-strut clasped purlins and wind braces. A heavy jowled post is present in the 17th-century southern bay beyond the chimney. The ground floor includes a large open fireplace and exposed joists.
