Description
The barn at White House Farm is a 17th-century structure that features a timber frame set on a stone plinth. The upper panels are made of woven wattle, while the lower part of the frame is covered with weatherboarding and some brick nogging. The roof is made of corrugated iron. This is a three-bay barn with a double boarded door in the center that rises to the eaves, and the left door is divided into two halves. The framing consists of three panels high, with some missing at the left end, and two types of weatherboarding below. To the right, there is a two-light casement window, a small boarded door, and a boarded door leading to a pitch-hole above. The eaves are raftered, and weatherboarding is present on both gables.
Inside, there is a long brace main post to the sill behind the framing, which does not interrupt the studs or rails. The sill is located on the left side of the threshing floor, with elbow-braces rising to the main posts and straight braces above connecting to the tie beam. Originally, there was a vertical post in the center. On the right side, only the upper braces remain from the cross framing. The trusses consist of a tie-beam, collar, and angle struts, with two pairs of purlins and a square ridge. The door at the rear is lower than the one facing the road. The interior was partly filled during an inspection in 1985. A further bay at the right end was originally a stable but was burnt and replaced by a brick lean-to in the mid-20th century; this lean-to is not of special interest.
