Description
The Veldt House is a 17th-century house, likely divided into two cottages in the 19th century and now returned to a single residence. It has 19th and 20th-century extensions. The house is timber-framed with brick infill, and has a clay tile roof. Originally a two-cell lobby entry house, it now also incorporates an 19th-century bay to the left and a modern wing to the rear of that bay. The original lobby entry was closed and paired doorways inserted in the hall bay at some point in the 19th century. This was later changed and the present entrance is now within the 19th-century extension to the left. The house is presently five bays, comprising two 19th-century bays, a stack bay, and a parlour bay. The timber framing is uneven and includes some diagonal bracing. Most windows are modern, small-paned casements and French doors, except for plate glass windows in a modern gable end. There are five dormers to the upper floor. A large brick central stack has been partly reconstructed. The interior layout has been altered due to the 19th-century conversion and a later 20th-century reconversion. The timber frame remains visible. Notable features include good quality framing, back-to-back fireplaces with oak lintels and stone jambs, and stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops along with original joists. The staircase is modern; the original and subsequent 19th-century staircases have been removed. The roof space, which was not inspected, appears to contain closed queen post trusses.
