Description
Hellens is a house dating from the 16th century, with alterations made in the 18th century. It is constructed of brick, with stone quoins and dressings, and features slate roofs and brick stacks. The building has a T-plan layout with a cross-wing to the north, and includes a cellar, two storeys, and attics.
The east garden elevation has six windows, with the main range displaying mullioned and transomed windows, as well as two glazing-bar sashes on the left side of the first floor. A string course separates the storeys. Beneath the fourth window from the left, there is a 16th-century moulded 4-centred doorway with a label and stops. A bell-cote is located on the ridge to the left of centre. The gable front to the right features a segmentally headed ground-floor French casement, a tripartite first-floor glazing-bar sash, and a 2-light attic casement.
At the junction of the two ranges, on the south and rear side of the cross-wing, there is an octagonal brick staircase tower topped with a cupola. The north elevation has three side stacks, and between the central and west stacks is a dormer with a shaped gable.
