Description
Wantz Cottage is a late 17th-century lobby-entrance house that has been altered in the 19th century and extended in the 20th century. It is timber-framed and plastered, with a roof that is mainly thatched but partly tiled. The building consists of three bays aligned northeast to southwest, featuring an original chimney stack with one hearth at the northeast end of the middle bay, which forms the lobby-entrance. There is another original chimney stack located at the rear of the southwest bay.
At the rear, there is a lean-to extension from the 18th or 19th century, as well as a single-storey extension with attics from the 20th century. The ground floor includes three 20th-century metal casement windows and a gabled, tiled porch. In the middle bay, there is a gabled and tiled dormer with one 20th-century metal casement window. The roof is half-hipped at both ends.
Internally, some timber framing is exposed, showcasing primary straight bracing, straight tiebeams, and unjowled posts. The ceiling beams are stop-chamfered. There is a blocked aperture for a former bread oven at the rear of the southwest hearth, which has since been demolished. The cottage was divided into two separate cottages in the 19th century, as shown in an old photograph in the National Monuments Record, which also indicates an additional dormer on the southwest side that has since been removed. The property was recombined into a single house around 1950, during which a new stair was constructed.
