Description

This is a lobby-entrance house dating from around 1600, with alterations made in the 17th and 19th centuries. The house is timber-framed, with plastered walls and a tiled roof. It is aligned north-east to south-west and originally comprised four bays, featuring an original two-hearth chimney in the chimney bay, the second from the south-west, which forms a lobby entrance. A rear extension was added in the 19th or early 20th century, including its own chimney stack. The house has a 19th-century chimney stack at the north-east gable and two storeys. The ground floor has four 19th or 20th-century casement windows and two late 19th-century doors with bracketed hoods, all tiled. The first floor has three 19th or 20th-century casement windows. An 18th-century triangular pediment sits above the centre of the elevation, featuring grouped diagonal shafts on the original chimney stack. Originally, the house was of single-storey with attics, with hearths only in the lower rooms. In the late 17th century, the walls were raised by approximately 1.5 metres, the roof rebuilt, and hearths inserted in the upper rooms. An 18th-century pediment was added at this time. In the 19th century, the house was divided into two cottages, and the rear extension was added, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. The interior features stop-chamfered ceiling beams, and both ground floor hearths have been blocked for 20th-century fireplaces. There is no exposed wall framing, and access to the roof is not available.
