Description
Rands Farmhouse is a late 16th-century farmhouse with 17th and 20th-century additions. The house is timber-framed and was originally plastered, though the 20th-century western crosswing is weatherboarded. The roof is tiled. The original core of the house comprises two bays, oriented east to west, with a chimney at the east end. Ceilings were inserted above the first floor in the early 17th century. An eastern wing extending to the south was added in the 17th century, with a further southern extension in the 20th century. A 17th-century stair tower is located in the rear angle, and a 20th-century crosswing was added at the west end. The house has two storeys. The ground floor features five sash windows and a 6-panelled door with an early 19th-century hood. Six sash windows are on the first floor. Some timber framing is exposed internally, revealing curved braces trenched to the inside of studs in the original building, while the east wing exhibits primary straight bracing. The roof construction features clasped purlins. Interior photographs were taken in 1981 and are held by the National Monuments Record.
