Description
Tarvatts Chase is a 16th-century barn that has been converted for use as a youth hostel and subsequently as a house. It features a timber-framed structure that is plastered, with a thatched roof. The barn consists of five bays aligned west to east, with a midstrey to the north and lean-to extensions at both ends. The second bay from the west remains open to the tiebeam level, while the other bays have been converted to two storeys and are ceiled throughout above the tiebeams. A 20th-century chimney stack is located between the second and third bays. There are four 20th-century casement windows on the ground floor and two on the upper floor. The roof is half-hipped at both ends, and most of the timber frame is exposed internally, showcasing jowled wallposts, arched braces to cambered tiebeams, and inclined queen posts. The barn was originally part of Tarvatts House, located 30 metres to the west-northwest, with a large pond situated between the two structures.
