Description

The Boughton monument is a chest tomb located about 5 meters east of the south-east corner of the south porch of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Westbury-on-Severn. It commemorates Joseph Boughton, who died in 1769, and is made of stone. The tomb features a flat lid with an overhang and a plain chamfer along the edge. The corners are adorned with quarter-square gadrooned balusters, and sunflowers are carved on the lower part. The sides display a winged head in the top center, with scrolled edging along the top and sides of the panel. The west end has a fielded panel with a large patera in the upper half, while the east end features a fielded panel with a segmental head and rococo carving in the spandrels. The monument stands on a chamfered plinth and includes later inscriptions dating up to 1864.
