Description
The Boughton monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard about 5 meters south of the south aisle of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Westbury-on-Severn. It commemorates Joseph Boughton the younger, who died in 1756, and is made of stone. The tomb features a thick, flat lid with a hollow chamfer along the edge. The sides display a winged head in the center, adorned with flowers and ribbons that extend across the top and down the ends. The main face is curved back at the edges to enhance the relief of the carving. The ends of the tomb are shaped like lyres, with scrolls carved on the main face, and a serpent of eternity surrounds an hourglass at the bottom of the panel, with feathers on the sides and fronds above. The scrolls are circular on the east end and approach a square shape on the west. An inscription dedicated to his wife is found on the north side. This monument is considered a good example of its kind.
