Description

The Boughton monument and railings, located in the churchyard about 22 meters south of the southeast corner of the south porch of the Church of St. Ethelbert, is a pedestal tomb and railed enclosure from the early 19th century, made of ashlar stone and wrought iron. The enclosure features a square design with a weathered, smooth cap on a sill wall. The cap is deep and has inscriptions on each external face, while the exposed furrowed ashlar below is visible on two sides due to the slope of the ground. The railing includes larger square corner balusters topped with urns, and the intermediate bars have tapered tops. Inside the enclosure is a small square pedestal tomb with plain sides and slightly recessed corners, set on a moulded base. The top has a wide projection and a flat gable with uncarved acroterions at each corner, all sloping back to the center. The monument commemorates Joseph Boughton, who died in 1801, with later inscriptions on the plinth of the enclosure; the pedestal records Joseph Boughton of Broadoak and his younger son, suggesting it was erected for the latter.
