Description

The Burlton memorial and railed enclosure, located approximately 5 meters south of the chancel of the Church of St. Simon and St. Jude, is a chest tomb and railed enclosure that likely dates from around 1822. It is constructed from limestone and features a rectangular shape with tapering ends. The tomb has a moulded capping and plinth supported by ball feet at the corners, resting on a stone base.

The top ledger is chamfered and has a broken finial on the north side, which is urn-shaped with a scalloped underside and cable moulding along the rim, intersecting with floral motifs on the sides. The tomb includes cable moulding around the moulded inscription panels, which have rosette emblems at the corners and center. The inscriptions commemorate Jane Burlton (died 1781), her husband John (died 1797), their son William (died 1822), and his wife Margaret (died 1824). There is also a brass plaque on the top ledger and an inscription on the south side in memory of Edward Burlton (died 1843).

Floral emblems are carved on the ends of the tomb, which features fluted fans at the corners. The tomb is situated within a railed enclosure that stands on a low chamfered plinth. The enclosure originally had spear-shaped cast-iron railings with urn-shaped standards, although these are now missing except for the standards in the south-east corner.
