Description
The Crown Hotel is a house that has been converted into an inn. It dates from the late 17th century and was remodeled in the mid-18th century, with later additions and alterations. The building features a timber frame with rendered and painted brick infill, and the front and right gable end have been rebuilt in painted brick on a rendered sandstone plinth. The roof is covered with slate.
The structure has two storeys and continuous floor bands along the main range. The timber framing is exposed at the rear of the main range and on the lower range to the left, displaying square panels on the first floor of the former and rectangular panels on the first floor of the latter. The lower range features a king post and raking struts from the tie beam to the principal rafters, which are visible beneath the render on the gable end.
The main range has three mid-20th century casement windows, while the lower range has two, with those on the ground floor set in 18th-century segmental-headed openings. There is a central 20th-century boarded door with a plain pilastered surround on the main range, which also has an integral end stack to the left and an external end stack to the right. To the left of the lower range, there are 19th-century stables, and mid-19th-century additions can be found at the rear of the main range. The building is included for its group value.
