Description

The Powell monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard about 5 metres north of the north-west corner of the tower of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Westbury-on-Severn. It commemorates Esther Powell, who died in 1771. The tomb is made of stone and features a thick, flat lid with a simply-moulded edge. At each corner, there are quarter square gadrooned balusters.

The south face has a main central panel framed by tall rectangles at each end. At the top center, there is a head with wings, and pendant rings at the top corners are adorned with flowers and scrolls that extend down the sides and across the bottom. The plain center is designed for an inscription, with curved edges that enhance the relief of the carving. The end panels also feature pendant rings at the top, with various flowers depicted below. The north face of the monument is badly weathered. The ends display a serpent of eternity surrounding an hourglass, with fronds above, feathers to the side, and scrolls below. This monument is a good example of its type and is well preserved, except for the north face.
