Description

The monument to the Madocke family is a chest tomb located in the churchyard, 4 metres southeast of the south porch of the Church of St Mary and St Peter. It likely dates from 1736, although it features earlier dates inscribed on it. The tomb is made of sandstone and has a flat, inscribed top with a moulded edge. It includes three sunk panels on the north and south sides, and one on the east and west, all resting on a moulded base and set on a platform surrounded by pointed square railings.

At the southwest end, there is a finely carved and painted coat of arms belonging to the Madocke family of Wibdon, which can also be seen inside the church. The top of the tomb bears an inscription dedicated to Bridget Madocke from 1736, but it also references other family members dating back to 1587. In 1736, Bridget Madocke bequeathed ten shillings to ensure the inscriptions on this family tomb remained legible, and the presence of the painted coat of arms indicates that this arrangement is still being honored.
