Description

TIDENHAM GENERAL ST 59 NE 10/190 Monument to Madocke family in the churchyard 4 metres south east of south porch of Church of St Mary and St Peter GV II Chest tomb. Probably of 1736, but with earlier dates inscribed. Sandstone. Flat, inscribed top to moulded edge, 3 sunk panels north and south and one east and west, moulded base, on platform with pointed square railings. At the south west end a fine carved and painted coat of arms, Madocke family of Wibdon (see also inside church). On top, inscription to Bridget Madocke, 1736, but inscriptions refer to other members of the family back to 1587. In 1736, ten shillings were left by Bridget Madocke to keep the inscriptions on this family tomb legible, and the evidence of the painted coat of arms suggests that this is happily still in effect.
