Description

Cleeve Mill is a water grist mill dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with corbelled brick eaves and features a clay plain tile roof with gabled ends. The mill has a rectangular plan with an overshot wheel located at the south end, and it is now attached to a mill house at the north end by infilling the space between the two buildings.

The exterior consists of two storeys and a loft, with an asymmetrical east front. There are doorways on the left and right, each with plank doors, and a three-light window between them. Above, to the right of centre, is a first-floor doorway with a cambered arch and another plank door. The left gable end features three-light windows, the overshot wheel, and a wooden sluice-gate. At the rear, there is a large weatherboarded outshut that is two storeys high and has a lean-to roof made of corrugated sheet steel.

Inside, the mill has unchamfered floor beams and joists, with a roof supported by collar trusses and long braces. A large timber hurst-frame is present, and the machinery remains intact, including iron bevel-gearing, stones, and wooden sack-hoist wheels. The iron overshot wheel is located at the south end, along with a wooden sluice to the head-race.
