Description
Hill Top is a detached house that dates from the first half of the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features a timber frame with brick nogging, and part of the third bay is constructed with Sussex-bond brick. It has a thatched roof and is arranged in three bays over one and a half storeys.
The entrance front shows that the left bay is narrower, with the main posts and timber framing exposed at the top of the wall, while the lower section is brick with a late 20th-century glazed door. The main beams are tenoned through the posts or studs, and there is a brace to the wallplate on the right. The brick section covers the timber framing, which is exposed internally. There is an exposed stud and main post, with a late 20th-century French door between them and a two-light casement window in the dormer above. The timber framing is two panels high, with a duplicate main post leading up to a projecting chimney breast. The remainder of the third bay and the right return are brick, while the left return is timber-framed and partially covered by an early 20th-century extension that is not of special interest.
The roof is half-hipped on the left, sweeping over the dormer, and has a gable on the right. A brick chimney is positioned on the ridge to the right of the dormer. The rear wall displays exposed timber framing, three panels high. Inside, there is a large stone fireplace in the central room, featuring a timber lintel. The house originally had two bays of timber framing and a gable chimney, and it was enlarged by one bay in timber framing, which was partly rebuilt in brickwork during the 19th century.
