Description

39 and 41 Church Street are two attached houses, possibly from the 17th century or late 18th century. They feature painted brickwork in Flemish bond and have a tiled roof. Each house is two windows wide, two rooms deep, and stands 2½ storeys tall with a continuous roof and eaves.

The street front of No 39 includes a tripartite sash window below a flat, rubbed-brick arch, flanking a 6-panel door that is slightly left of centre and accessed by one stone step. The top two panels of the door are glazed, while the remainder is fielded, framed by Roman Doric pilasters with a moulded frieze that projects over the pilasters. Below, on the right, there is a cellar opening with a cambered head and iron plates in the pavement. Above, there are two similar windows and a 3-light casement window with an iron opening light in the hipped dormer at the centre. A gable chimney is positioned in front of the ridge on the right.

To the left, No 41 has a boarded door on the right with a moulded surround, and a similar door on the left, also accessed by one stone step, featuring a 2-pane rectangular fanlight. There is a sash window under a long timber lintel on the left side. Above, two 20-pane sash windows appear to have stone lintels. A two-light casement window is located in the centrally set hipped dormer, with a gable chimney behind the ridge on the left. Additionally, there is a timber-framed rear wing to No 39, with a timber-framed wall between Nos 39 and 41.
