Description
No 28 on Church Street is a former house that has been converted into flats. The building likely has an earlier interior, while the exterior dates from the mid 19th century. It features a smooth rendered facade that is lined to resemble ashlar, and has a tiled roof. The structure is L-shaped and has four windows facing the street, with three storeys and a later two-storey extension at the rear.
The facade includes a plain plinth and projecting quoins. The doorway is located to the right of the center and is accessed by a step down from the pavement. It has four panels with pronounced fielding and projecting mouldings, and semi-circular heads on the upper panels. The reveals are plain, with an infilled or dummy rectangular fanlight above, framed by a reeded surround. The windows are all single-pane sashes with plain sills, flat heads, and reeded surrounds, while the second-floor openings are shorter.
The eaves are adorned with close ornamented brackets above a moulding, and there are quatrefoils between the brackets. An ogee cast-iron gutter runs along the roof, featuring lions' heads at the joints and mid-length of each section. The roof has a hipped left corner. The left return of the building has windows at each end and a wide gap in the center, with a plain chimney located at the mid slope. The facade on this side is similar to the front, but the right windows on the ground and first floors are tripartite sashes. To the left, there is a late 19th-century brick extension. The interior has not been inspected but is said to contain medieval timbering.
