Sampford Mill

Sampford Mill is a water grist mill dating from the early 19th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of random stone rubble and features a gabled roof covered with corrugated asbestos sheets. The building has a rectangular plan and houses machinery and a water wheel at the east end. It stands three storeys tall with a loft.

The north front includes a ground floor doorway with a chamfered frame, carpenters' mitres, and a window to the right, with a blind window above. The ground at the west end and the rear (south) is at first floor level. The west end has stone steps leading to a first floor doorway and a small window above for the loft. There is a 20th-century lean-to shed at the rear. At the east end, there is a large iron breast wheel, likely from the late 19th century, with first floor and loft windows situated above it.

Inside, the ground floor features stone flags, while the upper floors are supported by large, roughly chamfered cross beams and joists. The roof structure consists of a tie-beam with queen struts and tenoned purlins, which were in a severely decayed state at the time of the survey. The main feature of the mill is its machinery, which, although not complete, includes one complete pair of mill stones and cogging that was likely renewed in cast iron during the late 19th century.
