Description

Poughill Mill is a watermill dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble with a slate roof featuring gabled ends. The mill incorporates an overshot wheel and stands three storeys high with a single window on the front elevation. A double timber door is set within the left gable end, providing access. A two-light timber opening, protected by a timber lintel, is positioned on the first floor. The wheel pit retains a high surrounding wall, and the iron framework of the wheel itself remains largely intact. The side of the mill facing the wheel contains two two-light openings on the first floor, with one featuring timber casements and vertical glazing bars under a timber lintel. Two similar two-light timber openings are present on the second floor.

Inside, the ground floor incorporates ten old millstones. The horizontal gearing system is largely complete. The first floor retains two dressers with compartments used for grading grains. The second floor was not inspected. Poughill Mill was in commercial use as recently as 1948.
