Description

Townsend Cottage is a pair of 17th-century houses located on Maiden Street in Stratton. The cottages are whitewashed and have been plastered, featuring a truncated front lateral stack constructed from stone rubble and a thatched roof, gabled on the left and hipped on the right, where it extends over a lean-to. A stone stack with a brick shaft rises from the ridge, alongside a brick chimney to the lean-to and a brick chimney at the left gable end. The houses follow a single-depth plan. An entrance to the left-hand cottage is sheltered by a slated canopy supported by brackets. A further entrance serves the right-hand house, while two blocked recesses on the front, to the right, may have originally been doors. The building has two storeys and a long, asymmetrical four-window front. A 20th-century pane sash window is visible on the ground floor to the left. The remaining six ground floor windows are a mix of 19th and 20th-century casements, with 1, 2, and 3 lights, and glazing bars. Four first-floor windows are 20th-century casements – three with 3 lights, and one with 2 lights, all with glazing bars. The interior has not been inspected.
