Description
Lower Kennal Vale Mill is a water mill for grinding grain, dating from around the mid-19th century. It is constructed from granite rubble with granite dressings and features a scantle slate roof, which has been partly replaced with corrugated asbestos. The roof is hipped at the front end and has gable ends at the rear, with a louvered ventilator over the ridge.
The mill has a rectangular plan and includes a wheel-pit for a former overshot wheel located on the right-hand side. There are later 19th-century extensions on the left-hand side. The hub of the waterwheel and the internal machinery are intact, including a large cast-iron gear wheel with wooden zaps. This gear drives a smaller cog at either end, from which drive shafts extend across the mill building (within an inaccessible basement) to operate a pair of stones and other machinery near the front, as well as a grain cleaner located behind.
The exterior of the mill is two storeys high with simple, unaltered elevations. The front features a wide first-floor window opening, along with doorways on the left-hand side and a blocked doorway at the rear gable end of the left-hand extension. The original rear gable end has a ground floor window and loading doorways leading to the first floor and attic.
Inside, the mill retains its floors, roof structure, and fittings, with multiple levels present. Part of the ground floor serves as a basement for the axial drive shafts. The attic floor is situated high up in the roof space, and there is a complex arrangement of ductings, hoppers, and both gear and belt-driven machinery. The roof structure includes lapped dovetailed struts.
