Description
The building is a water mill for grinding gunpowder, dating from around 1850. It was constructed for the Kennal Vale gunpowder works. The structure is made of dressed granite and granite rubble and is currently roofless. The mill has a rectangular plan with a central wheel pit that divides two similar rectangular two-storey blocks, each with original basements designed to house the gearing, while the millstone is located on the upper floors. The hub and parts of the rims of the waterwheel are still intact. The mill is built into the bank at the rear and was originally powered by water from a leat that runs parallel to the back of the building.
The exterior features two storeys, with a stone floor above the basement. The east-south-east front is symmetrical with two windows. There is a tall central opening for the wheel pit, flanked by two originally identical one-window fronts. Each front includes a small opening for the basement and larger openings above. Part of the right-hand bay has collapsed. The interior has not been inspected, but it may still contain machinery and millstones. This mill is notable as the last built and last used of a group of six similar mills that remain in the picturesque Kennal Valley.
