Description
The building is a water mill for grinding gunpowder, dating from the early 19th century. It was constructed for the Kennal Vale Gunpowder Works. The mill is made of dressed granite and granite rubble and is currently roofless. It has a rectangular plan with a central cross wheel pit that divides two similar rectangular two-storey blocks, which originally included basements for the gearing and millstones on the upper floors. The mill is built into the bank at the rear and was originally powered by water from a leat that runs parallel to the back of the structure.
The exterior features two storeys, with a stone floor over the basement. The symmetrical southeast front has two windows, with a tall central wheelpit opening flanked by two identical one-window fronts. Each front includes a small basement opening and a larger opening above. There are doorways into the end walls. The interior has not been inspected, but it is possible that machinery and millstones remain. This mill is part of a group of six similar mills that still exist in the picturesque Kennal Valley.
