Description
The building is a water mill for grinding gunpowder, dating from the early to mid-19th century. It was constructed for the Kennal Vale Gunpowder Works. The mill is made of dressed granite and granite rabble and is currently roofless. It has a rectangular plan with two-storey blocks that originally featured basements for the gearing and millstones located on the upper floors. The mill is built into the bank at the rear and was originally powered by water from a leat that runs parallel to the back.
The exterior consists of two storeys, with a stone floor over the basement. The east-south-east front is symmetrical with two windows. There is a tall central wheelpit opening flanked by two identical one-window fronts. Each front includes a small basement opening and a large opening above. There are doorways into the end walls. The interior has not been inspected, but it may contain machinery and millstones. This mill is part of a group of six similar mills that remain in the picturesque Kennal Valley and is unique for having a gable end.
