Description
Kennal Vale Mill and the former miller's house are a mill and residence that likely date back to the 18th century, with extensions made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are constructed from granite rubble with granite dressings, while the house is rendered. Some parts of the mill have a slurried or painted finish. The roofs are made of grouted scantle and dry Delabole slate, although the left-hand cross gable and the lower range next to the road have some asbestos slate. The roofs of the 20th-century additions are covered with corrugated asbestos or iron, and all roofs feature gable ends.
The layout consists of a large irregular plan, with a long rectangular two-storey and three-storey mill range at the back. There are two wings that project from the right side of the three-storey section, and a formerly detached mill at the far right, now connected by a 20th-century structure. A lower store, likely from the same period, is attached at an obtuse angle to the front of the left-hand mill. In front of the three-storey mill is a former miller's house with a two-room plan and a central lobby or cross passage. An external rubble stack is located at the left end of the house, with a 20th-century extension on the right. Behind the left side of the mill, there is a wheel pit, and possibly some machinery remains. An intact leat runs parallel to the rear of the mill, likely supplying water to overshot wheels.
The exterior features two and three storeys, with the southeast front displaying a two-storey section on the left and a three-storey section in the middle, flanked by two gable-ended wings. The far right shows the gable end of a two-storey mill. Some original windows remain, including an 18-pane sash window with a nine-pane fixed light above it towards the left. The miller's house has a symmetrical front with two windows and a central doorway, featuring possibly early 19th-century 12-pane casements on the first floor and later sashes below. The entrance has a ledged door. The interior has not been inspected, but it may still contain some machinery.
