Description
Nos 4, 5, and 6 are a row of three cottages built in the mid-19th century. They are constructed from red sandstone squared rubble and feature steeply pitched diamond tiled roofs with overhanging eaves. The cottages have renewed brick stacks on the ridges, flanking a central gable, and an external stepped stack on the left gable end, with another on the gable end of the right return rear wing. The layout is "U"-shaped, with a gabled centre block that projects forward.
The buildings are two storeys high and have a symmetrical arrangement of bays, with one bay for each cottage. All windows feature ovolo moulded wooden mullions, with two-light gabled dormers in the outer bays and a three-light casement with a lancet window in the gable end of the centre cottage. The ground floor has two- and three-light casements, and each cottage has a bell-cast tiled porch with pierced wooden gables positioned to the right of the respective windows, leading to studded plank doors.
Lower gabled wings extend from the returns, with outshots. The cottages are fronted by spearhead railings set in dwarf walls that rise towards the cottages in the outer bays, with gates of a similar design at the entrances. These were estate cottages built by the Acland Hoods. The picturesque asymmetrical frontage and the left return create an important feature at the crossroads in Sampford Brett.
