Description

2 Standingstone Cottages, located in Standingstone, were built in the later 19th century and consist of three single-storey farm cottages designed with a consistent theme. The cottages are constructed from squared and snecked, stugged red rubble sandstone, featuring ashlar dressings. They have sash and case windows with a 4-pane glazing pattern, shallow depressed arch lintels above doors, and boarded doors topped with plate glass fanlights. The roofs are covered with grey slates, and there are stone corbels at the eaves, along with timber barge boards. The end stacks have moulded coping, and some original chimney cans are still in place.

The single cottage has a three-bay layout, with a gabled porch that projects at the center, featuring a kingpost and a narrow window, along with a door on the return elevation and a window in each flanking bay. There is also a window on the north gable end. At the rear, there is a piend-roofed stone addition, which includes a later harled, pentice-roofed porch in the re-entrant angle.

The pair of cottages has a symmetrical five-bay design, with a gabled bay at the center that includes windows and a gablehead stack. The doorways are located in the flanking bays, close to the center, with windows in the outer bays. Each return elevation features a window that is off-center. Similar to the single cottage, there are piend-roofed stone and harled projections at the rear. The property is also defined by low, semi-circular coped rubble retaining walls.
